Sand Dunes at Lagg
Travelling north from Malin towards Malin Head along Trawbrega Bay you will find a fine sandy beach called Five Fingers Strand backed by sand dunes which are amongst the highest in Europe.
The sand dunes probably began to form where they are now about 5,000 years ago.
The tough marram grass that grows on the dunes and helps hold them together, grows best when sand is blown on top of it. Here, great sandhills up to 30 metres high have been built up by the wind blowing sand from the beach and into the marram.
The beach at Five Fingers Strand is a great place to walk, with spectacular views across Trawbrega Bay to the Isle of Doagh.
